A worn suspension component may start with a small clunk, an uneven ride, or unusual tire wear. Ignore it long enough, though, and that minor problem can affect handling, ride quality, tire life, and other nearby components.

Before your next haul, take some time to inspect the heavy-duty truck suspension components that work hardest to keep your rig stable.

Why Your Truck Suspension Deserves Attention Before a Long Haul

A heavy-duty truck suspension system has two primary jobs: supporting weight and controlling movement.

Your suspension carries the weight of your truck and its cargo while distributing those forces across the system. The thing is, you also need to keep how you load your cargo in mind. Even a healthy suspension may struggle when freight has been loaded unevenly or beyond appropriate limits.

The suspension absorbs impacts from potholes, expansion joints, uneven pavement, and other road hazards. Without that cushioning effect, repeated impacts would transfer far more force into your frame, cab, wheel ends, cargo, and other mechanical systems.

Regular truck suspension inspection can help you spot problems before those components deteriorate further.

Check Your Leaf Springs for Cracks and Damage

Many commercial trucks use leaf spring suspension because it is straightforward, durable, and well suited to demanding working conditions.

Leaf springs consist of curved metal leaves stacked together. As the truck travels over uneven pavement, the spring pack flexes to help support the vehicle and absorb movement.

Look closely at the individual leaves.

A minor leak can eventually become a bigger headache. The compressor may need to work harder to maintain pressure, and suspension performance can become inconsistent if the system cannot maintain the required air supply.

Don't assume every hiss is normal. Have persistent leaks properly diagnosed.

Check Shock Absorbers for Leaks and Damage

Your suspension supports weight, but heavy-duty shock absorbers control how the truck responds after hitting a bump.

Shock absorbers use hydraulic fluid internally to absorb road impacts and control rebound. In plain English, they stop your wheels and suspension from bouncing excessively after they encounter rough pavement.

Inspect the shock body and mounting points. Look for visible damage or signs of fluid leakage.

Pay attention to how the truck behaves from behind the wheel as well. Excessive bouncing after a bump, unstable handling, or a noticeably harsher ride can justify a closer look at the shocks.

Good shocks don't make potholes disappear, but they help keep the truck composed after you hit one.

Inspect Suspension Bushings and Connection Points

Suspension components don't work independently. They rely on numerous mounting and connection points to keep movement controlled.

During your commercial truck suspension maintenance, inspect accessible bushings, brackets, bolts, and mounting locations for looseness, abnormal movement, deterioration, or damage.

A worn connection point may create knocking or clunking sounds as the truck accelerates, brakes, turns, or travels over rough roads.

Don't Ignore Wheel Bearings and Wheel-End Heat

Bearings allow wheel assemblies to rotate with minimal friction and must remain properly lubricated. When lubrication or bearing condition deteriorates, friction increases.

Excess heat is a major warning sign.

After stopping safely, unusual wheel-end heat, smoke, or screeching can indicate a serious wheel bearing problem. A severely failed bearing can compromise the structural integrity of the wheel assembly.

This isn't a "deal with it after the delivery" situation. Wheel-end symptoms need immediate attention.

Look at Your Tires for Clues
